United States Coins

US coins are the most heavily collected in the world. Value depends heavily on year, mint mark, and condition, and certain key dates are worth many times their common counterparts.

US mint marks

• No mark / P — Philadelphia
• D — Denver
• S — San Francisco

The mint mark location varies by coin and era. On older coins it’s often on the reverse; on modern coins it’s usually on the obverse.

Classic US coins to look for

Wheat pennies (1909–1958), Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, and Morgan/Peace silver dollars are the coins most people find and want identified. Silver content alone gives older dimes, quarters, and dollars a meaningful floor value.
